Can you tell which little pet this is?
Bottom row -- L to R: Ethan, Grace, Sophie. Top row -- L to R: Jane, Alex.
To create these little portraits, I simply posed each child in front of an open doorway and snapped a picture on my cell phone. I then uploaded the pictures, inserted them into a Word document {fiddling around with the sizes to try and make them all proportional} and then printed them out on regular old computer paper. To finish them off, I cut them carefully out along their profile {this was probably the trickiest part} and colored over them with a black sharpie. Voila. Done.
{The backlighting from standing inside the house in front of the open door helped to throw the profile in shadow which helped a little when it came time to cut it out.}
It was Jane in that top silhouette in case you haven't figured that out yet. :)
I have to say, I was much more tickled by the end result than I was expecting to be. Something about the way that these profiles were so recognizably each of my children kind of warmed my heart! I found these little frames at Michael's {I think they're 2 1/2 X 3 1/2}, taped each silhouette to a piece of heavy watercolor paper that I already had lying around the house, and popped them into place. {Fun fact -- there were only 4 black picture frames left at the store, so I bought a white one and spray painted it black for our poor little fifth born child. (Krylon "Black" in a satin finish.)}
{Don't worry -- displayed on a cake stand in the middle of the dining room table is NOT their final resting ground. Hahahaha.}

Love it. I did some of my oldest two for my mom, and still have the photo cut out, but haven't made a set for myself, and of course I now have a third I need to do. I think they are such a fun thing to have--it'd be fun to do another set in 10 years and see how they've changed.
Wow I love this and how easy! I might just need to do this! You've inspired me.
you did not even need to say who's silhouette was whos! it was very obvious!! they are SOOOO darling. now i wanna do it!
love this how-to! it's much easier than some others i have read.
This seems actually doable! I've always wanted silhouettes of the kids and these are a great size.
