Birthday Bashing

My birthday week is over!  It was fun while it lasted, even if Scott was the only one trying to do anything about it.  :)  The kids were largely uninterested in making anything special happen, although Sophie did say that she told me she loved me everyday, and she DID color a portrait of me during sacrament meeting yesterday.  Hahaha.

Scott showered me on Days 1-5 with gifts that were equal parts practical and whimsical, and I loved it all.  For Day 6, on Saturday, we went out on a Birthday Date, and on Sunday, for Day 7, I actually convinced Ethan to write me a letter telling me what he respects and appreciates about me -- serving the dual purpose of filling my bucket, AND checking off one of his "Faith in God" SERVICE requirements.  :)

DAY 2

My Barnes & Noble haul.  I have eclectic tastes.  Hahahaha.  Actually the Abigail Adams book was for Sophie -- she's doing a report (and wax museum) on her for school.  The Fashion Book was in the children's section, but looked so interesting I couldn't resist.  :)  And as for "The Grapes of Wrath," I've decided I need to catch up on some "classics" that I've never read before.

DAY 3

Sa-weeeeet!!  Our old crockpot lid has had the knob busted off for years, and it seemed to be burning things more often than not.  Scott is so observant.  :)

DAY 4

Hahahaha.  I've been so FREEZING this past month, that Scott thought this heating pack would do the trick!

DAY 5
And finally, the piece de resistance!  I get to pick out some new scriptures.  As you can see above, this set that I've had since I was 14 or 15 has seen better days.  The cover has come completely off and it's only a matter of time before pages start to get ripped out, too.  The only thing that's been holding me back from getting new ones before now, is the sadness at losing all the notes and insights that I've scribbled in the margins over the years.  :(  BUT, there's nothing wrong with starting from scratch and gaining new insight and inspiration as I mark up a new set of scriptures.

DAY 6
Birthday Date at The Cheesecake Factory -- because we're so predictable like that.  Hahaha.  I did go the unpredictable route, though, and chose something different than my usual fare from off the menu.  I went with the Santa Fe Salad, and I have to say -- it was SOOOO good.  It could be a new favorite.  :)

DAY 7
Ethan spent a good 3 or 4 minutes thinking and writing to come up with the following...

{Dear mom, I am going to make a list of things I like about you and things I respect of you.  One thing I like about you is that you make dinner for us every night.  I also like that you create fun activities for us.  One thing I respect about you is that you do so much stuff that you don't want to do.  Another thing I respect about you is that you read your scriptures ever day.  This is a list of things I like about you and things I respect of you.}

Bless his little heart!  My favorite things about this letter are:
  1. He told me what he was going to tell me, then he told me, and then he told me what he had just told me.  Hahahahaha.
  2. His perception -- and thus reality -- is that I make dinner every night.  This is actually a fallacy.  I make an actual dinner maybe 3 or 4 nights out of the week.  The rest of the nights are filled with the laziness of leftovers, "free space," or cereal.  Haha.  :)
  3. When I asked him what "fun activities" he was referring to, he couldn't quite come up with anything concrete and mumbled something about snow days.  To which I replied, "WHAT??? You NEVER go along with ANY of my ideas for activities when you're all home from school."  Hahahaha.  But at least he appreciates my effort, right??
  4. He admires that even though I'm SUPER lazy I still get stuff done.

And that, folks, is that!  I am officially 35.  I tried to turn Day 7 into a movie afternoon where I got to choose the movie and all the kids would have to watch it with me -- Little Women is what I had queued up, in case anyone is interested -- but that was stopped in it's tracks by an absolute Tropical Storm Grace.  Let's just say that daylight savings + nothing more substantive than Cheerios and chips being consumed for the day precipitated a bit of a crash.   Thankfully, they all went to bed that night without a fuss and that's the best birthday present this mom could ask for.  :)
