This picture kind of tugs at my heartstrings.
Scott took Ethan to scouts this evening, so I was on my own for putting the rest of the kids to bed. Unlike most nights, it was actually quite a pleasant feat. It helped that the two little ones were SUPER worn out from all their hard playing today {always a happy occurrence}, and as an added bonus I really enjoyed reading them their books. I've come to realize that I only hate reading out loud when I don't like the book I'm reading. And unfortunately, there are a LOT {and I mean A LOT} of really dumb children's books out there. Tonight, however, was magical. Haha. As I was reading Penny and Her Marble to Alex -- he's on a BIG Kevin Henkes streak -- I was watching his little face out of the corner of my eye the whole time, and it melted my heart to see him hanging on to every word (even though we've read it a dozen times) and carefully studying each picture as we went through the story. Reading with Jane was rather sweet, too, as I successfully convinced her to give Ann Estelle another try, and we read Queen of the Class together -- first with me reading it to her, and then with HER reading it to me. We finished the night off with the first chapter of Charlotte's Web, and it reminded me so much of reading the book to Grace and Sophie for the first time, when Jane was a little baby. It's so hard to believe that was five years ago! Time really does fly. Especially when you've got little kids. They don't stay very little for very long. And as frustrated as I get during the times when our bedtime process gets dragged out because we read to them every night, I'm so grateful I have moments every now and then like tonight, that make me REALLY glad that we've built bedtime stories into our routine. :)
{And in case anyone is wondering, Grace and Sophie are both reading The Mother Daughter Book Club series right now. And yes, I'm thrilled! Hahaha. Grace is on Book 4 -- Pies and Prejudice, and Sophie is on Book 1. And Ethan basically only reads the Blog books. Hahaha.}

Doesn't it make you feel good that Ethan would rather read what YOU wrote than anything else? :)
We read at bedtime, everynight for Henry, but several nights a week still for the older two, even though they can read perfectly well to themselves, but I've loved introducing books I loved as a kid to them that they won't pick up on their own. So I force them to listen to me and they end up loving them, too. it's awesome.
