Featuring my acorn wreath of many colors...
I made my wreath in the Fall of 2010. It was our first autumn in St. Louis and when I saw the hundreds and hundreds of acorns lying around our backyard, I knew I needed to make this wreath that I had seen in a tutorial on Dana Made It. Hahaha. I picked up a straw wreath form at Michael's or JoAnn's {I really can't remember which, and I know they have them at both -- and they're probably available at a Wal-mart, too, for that matter} and I lovingly hot-glued at least a hundred of those acorns onto the wreath over the course of a couple of nights while watching TV after the kids were in bed.
By the time I was done, I had burned myself a few good times, but the finished product was even better than I envisioned! I promptly spray painted it the first of many colors and hung it on our door. Since that first Fall, it's seen at least a dozen other colors and -- if possible -- I love it even more now than I did when I first made it. Here, for your viewing pleasure, is a sampling of its color story.
{And if any of you attempt to make one yourself, please take note that you have to do something to the acorns to keep maggots from sprouting in them. I learned that the hard way. You can either bake them at a low temperature to kill anything inside or freeze them. Since my wreath was already glued together and spray-painted when I first saw a tiny little critter eating its way through an acorn, I opted for the freezer route and just stuck the whole entire thing in a bag then shoved it in our basement freezer for a couple of days to make sure everything was good to go. Learn from my mistakes!}
I pretty much only ever use Krylon's spray paint in a gloss finish for the wreath.
"Pumpkin Orange" -- one of my faves.
"Bauhaus Gold" -- this isn't the greatest picture to showcase the color, but I really love this one as well.
"Leather Brown"
"Banner Red"
"Ivy Leaf" -- another of my all-time faves.
"Gum Drop"
and "Blue Ocean Breeze" -- another fave. I think I need to get some more of this color to change up the color for May.
I thought I had more pictures of other colors I've used, but apparently I don't take pictures of each and every change. Haha. Oh well! Hopefully the above colors are enough to inspire you. :) Have a happy weekend!

love love love all the colors. colors are so fun and happy. my acorns literally were almost all eaten by birds when we lived in washington at the ranch. sooo bummed. b/c this is the perfect wreath for year round to make front door cheery and festive.
We live in acorn heaven so this is def on my to do list.
Thanks for sharing!
If I can get to the acorns before the squirrels and birds, I will have to try this. Abe was just asking me if there is such a thing as a "plain " wreath with no holiday association and this could be that :)
oh fun! my kids loved collecting all the acorns. one caveat to making it, though, is like my sister said -- the birds eating the wreath. i haven't had a problem ever with it, but i made one for emily that christmas and hers totally got eaten. they were living out in the country, though, so i think you're probably safe hanging it up in a suburban dwelling. :)
I like the purple and green combo. Gonna change it up for 4th of July????
I NEED THIS WREATH!!!!
