Semblance of Normal

I thought I'd take a break from the disorder and chaos of the summer so far by sharing a snapshot of my efforts to pretend like everything is normal and this is just a regular, old summer.  Hahaha.  Introducing, the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge!!!  ;)

Grace has been hounding me for a couple of weeks now to get the poster made with the categories so that she can start her summer reading.  Because apparently, there's nothing like a chart to fill out for motivational purposes.  {Perhaps that's what I need to create to get the rest of the boxes unpacked and the house in order.}  So I finally got around to buying some new banner paper, rather than waiting until we found which box it was still hiding in from the move.  I actually sat down with the kids over a month ago and had them decide on the categories for challenge because I knew life would be crazy with the transition of the move, but having the categories listed on a piece of paper on the bulletin board was just not good enough.  Haha.

This year, I had Ethan through Alex choose 2 categories each, and I chose the last 2.  I was hopeful that it would make them more inclined to participate this summer, but that hope is starting to disperse.  The summer isn't over YET, though, so perhaps they'll all surprise me and finish off strong!  Crazier things have happened, I'm sure.  ;)

12 Weeks of Summer Reading Challenge -- one book to fill each of the following categories:

* Caldecott Winner
* An Oldie, But a Goodie (re-reading a book that they've read before and really liked)
* Dystopian
* Historical Fiction
* Sci-Fi/Fantasy
* Realistic Fiction
* Your Choice
* Captain Underpants (this was one of Alex's choices, in case you were wondering)
* Graphic Novel
* Mystery
* Book of Poetry
* Mom's Choice

In other pretending news, I wanted to share a picture of possibly the only room in the house that looks really neat and orderly right now.  Hahaha.  Ethan has been at scout camp this week, and while he was gone, I went ahead and picked out new bedding for him since he's essentially been using the same set he's had since he was 5 years old and we had moved into our very first house.  I figured since he's almost 15, he'd like a bit of an upgrade.  As an added bonus, it gives a beautiful after shot of the "Gray Owl" paint color that I used in his room (and in Grace and Sophie's) as well as the brand new carpet that finally got installed this week.

It looks rather spartan for right now, but now that Ethan's back from camp I know he's itching to get all his stuff put back where it belongs.  (All his stuff had been put away in the basement of our old house once we got the house listed and ready to sell.)

And that's all folks!  Maybe by next week I'll have some more before and afters to showcase.  :) Until then -- Happy Friday!

Grace's Lightbox for the week -- Hahahahahaha.  Apparently Ethan directed her to pay tribute to him while he was at scout camp.  Hahahaha.

That rooms like so nice and clean and empty! I kind of love emptiness since we seem to have so much junk everywhere!

Can't wait to hear how the reading challenge turns out. What a great idea!
