The Start of an Era

 Little Miss Brace Face

Sophie got her top braces on today!  The actual process itself was rather painless, but by the time she got home from school this afternoon, her teeth were hurting pretty bad.  :(  After giving her some "pain reliever" (as she kept calling it), we set about trying to find her something she could eat.  And came up with pretty much nothing.  Because, OF COURSE, I had managed to layout a snack comprised of things she totally wasn't supposed to eat -- apple slices and pretzels.  DOH!  Please tell me this list isn't completely necessary!  The poor child already has enough food restrictions with her allergies.  I really hate the idea of limiting even more what she can have!

We finally settled on some soup, and she was happy enough to eat that for an after school snack, but then for dinner, even the penne pasta NOODLES I had made for her were hurting her teeth.  She cut them all into smaller pieces and managed to finish them off, but ended up going for round 2 of the soup to round out her dinner.  Hahaha.  Poor little supermuppet.

 "Pain reliever" time!  :)

Demonstrating at bedtime how much it hurts.  :(

When I asked her tonight what she'd like the world to know about her braces, she said, "they hurt my teeth."  So, for her sake (and MINE), I'm really hoping the soreness wears off soon!

Unrelated, but kind of funny -- THIS is how Sophie reads at night.  With a flashlight.  Grace's orders.  Hahahaha.  Grace doesn't like having the lamp or overhead light on at night, so she uses a flashlight, too.  Those kids!  :)

My husband has braces right now, and I had them as a kid. From both of our experiences, it only hurts the first day of each appointment. And I ate whatever I wanted (not the best example).

I have memories of braces hurting, but usually only right after the tightening, the first day or so. I actually have one memory of lying on the floor in my family room just crying, because of so much pain.

But other than that, I ate anything i wanted. I didn't follow any of those rules.

I never regretted not following the dietary rules.

I DO however regret not following other rules. Hopefully these don't apply to Sophie, but at one point, I had headgear (only at home thank goodness!) and bands. I didn't like my headgear though, and if I left it lying around, the dog would always chew it up. So I didn't wear my headgear as often as I should (which was every night to sleep). I did, however, for whatever reason, like the bands. Sometimes I would double or triple them. SO, while I had braces, I actually made my teeth MORE crooked, because the doubled/tripled bands were pulling them and the headgear was not, and I really messed up with that. I ended up having to wear braces for three years, because of how long it took to fix the issues I had made.

So . . . don't let her do that if she has bands or headgear. :) Make sure she's following those instructions! They're important!

The food list, nah. Not so much. :)
