Scheduling

First things first.  The mornings HAVE been fantastic -- thank you for asking.  And the afternoons have been fairly bearable, too.  All-in-all, the week has gone pretty well and the summer is definitely in full swing.  I do NOT do well when we have no schedule and I have learned over the years that I need structure to survive.  So, here is what is on the docket for the upcoming weeks and months.

See that?  "IRONMAN"???  I mean, come on.  How could I NOT get this watch when
I saw it at Walmart.

On Memorial Day afternoon, I sat down and decided to get serious about my whole "training" schedule for the summer.  I had already signed up to do the 30 day Ironman Triathlon at the gym and I needed to see what exactly I was in for.  I was worried about the time commitment it would entail, especially since I'm also planning on running a 10K at the end of this month and quite possibly a half-marathon at the end of September.  I was quite pleased at the end of my calendaring session to discover that I will not have to be a gym bunny NEARLY as much as I thought I would.  Yes, I will need to make it a daily priority, but at most it will only take up about an hour of my day.  {Except for the Saturdays towards the end where my long runs will take a bit longer, of course.}  An hour a day is how long I'm usually at the gym anyway.  Now I just feel like I'm a lot more focused and directed in my efforts.

A slight wrench was thrown in my plans on Tuesday when I was running and started to feel a bit of pain in my calf during the last half mile (and then kept running on it because I was using my new watch to time myself and didn't want to stop short of my 3 miles).  By the time I was done, I could hardly put any weight on my right leg and I was SURE that all my efforts up to that point were in vain and that my schedule for the next 4 months was OVER!  {I'm a bit of an extremist in case you didn't know.}  After icing it throughout the day Tuesday and resting it, and then skipping the gym completely yesterday, I was ECSTATIC to find that it felt almost back to normal today.  I was really worried that it was a strained or pulled muscle, but I think maybe it was just really cramped up.  I did some biking this morning rather than running, and I'll probably hold off on the running until sometime next week, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to stick with my schedule and finish my course!

On the kid front, a couple of Sundays ago we generated our annual list of fun stuff to do this summer.  You would think that since MY demands are so far fewer than the kids' demands I would have no trouble at all in getting them to do what I want them to do.  You would think wrong.  Hahaha.  The only reason the gym is happening at all right now is because I can do it while the older kids are at summer school.  Quiet reading time has only really happened once -- today, in fact.  And chores have only been sufficiently done a couple of times.  Other than that we're having lots of fun!  Hahahaha.

At the beginning of the week, Ethan took it upon himself to type up our schedule of "Afternoon Activities" for the summer.  Unfortunately, we've already gone astray in the first week of implementation.  Probably not a great sign.  We did manage to hit up the library on Monday, but Tuesday and Wednesday were a bust.  Today's outing to the pool was a success, but that's only because it's pretty hard to go wrong on a "Free Space" day, right?  Hahahaha.  Not so successful?  Checking Alex into the tot care so I could watch the other 4 at the pool by myself.  Poor little Lover Boy was basically heart-broken at being left behind without any familiar faces and was fussy and crying almost the whole time.  Talk about breaking a mother's heart!  I'm not sure I can do that to him ever again.

There you have it.  A week in Summer-land.  Thank you and goodnight.

Awesome training calendar! And cool watch too. :-)I hear ya about the injury worry. I think I ran a little to hard a little too fast last week and this week every run has been a killer. I'm having lots of knee pain, which is not fun! I'm thinking about not running at all while at Girls camp, but I'm a little nervous with the 10k coming up. Oh well, we'll see what happens I guess! Good luck to you!

karissa -- i know what you mean! i'm nervous about the 10K, too, because i've decided i shouldn't push it and try and do a longer run tomorrow. i've kind of bummed, though, because i took your advice and bought some cute running clothes and i wanted to debut them this saturday! hahahaha. oh well, it won't kill me to wait a week. :)

and emily -- "sleepovers" mean the kids want to have sleepovers in each others rooms. hahahaha. like remember how we used to have "sista sleepovas" when we were younger? ahahhahaha. although they have spent the night a couple of times at the neighbors house down the street. and technically grace is camping out with her girl scout troop tonight, so perhaps real sleepovers are going to happen as well.

and for art projects, i have no idea what the kids have in store. we went to walmart and stocked up their "art buckets" for the summer, so they have plenty of markers and paper and other art stuff so we'll see what they come up with.
