Even Stevens

Yesterday's ultrasound revealed that come November, we will be adding another BOY to the mix!!  We're practically the Brady Bunch now.  Hahahaha.  To be honest, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea -- I was so certain it was going to be a girl -- but I'm happy and excited for Isaac to join our family.  {True story -- the name Isaac has been chosen for quite a while now, for "if" the next baby were to be a boy.  The reason?  Isaac means "laughter," and I always told the kids that if we actually had a boy next and not Lily, like I imagined, then the joke would be on me.  Haha.}

In case anyone is wondering, I went to one of those early ultrasound places, because I'm just too impatient to wait for the regularly scheduled one through my doctor's office.  :)  Everyone {minus Grace -- who was more interested in screen time than in discovering what we were having} came along for the reveal, and it was really fun to see the baby on the screen.  It was so crazy to see how much he's already moving around, when I still haven't really felt it yet.   The funniest part of the whole visit, though, was when Alex -- who, along with Ethan, has been "Team Isaac" the whole time -- said {and I quote}:  "I told you if it was Isaac I was going to laugh! {followed up with forced and exaggerated maniacal laughter}."  Hahahaha.   I can admit it -- they were right and I was wrong.  :)

 I thought this picture was so hilarious with his little bum sticking up in the air.  All the kids got a big kick out of it as well.  :)

Stay tuned next week for more recaps of the last week of school...

Falling Behind

There is just too much catching up to do!  I'm falling behind with blogging -- which is clearly not crucial for life's existence -- but it certainly makes me sad.  I think that life just gets busier as kids get older, and this pregnancy is definitely leaving me more tired than I would typically be.  Not to mention, last night was another busy, late night.  Ethan's 6th Grade Recognition Night took place at the school yesterday from 7-8PM, and by the time we got home it was already 8:30 -- way too late for the little ones -- once everyone was finally in bed and falling asleep it was almost 9.  Rather than recap the graduation, however, I thought I'd back track today to catch up on child number 2.

Grace is growing up.  And just to make that more official, she has now delved into the realm of peep-toed heels for her church footwear.  Hahahaha.  Seriously, though.  Shoe shopping with this one a couple of weeks ago was one of the more exasperating experiences of my life over the last little bit.  For whatever reason, she got it into her head that the shoes she needed for church had to be: 1.) Peep-toed 2.) Sparkly and 3.) High heels.  NONE of which seem to reconcile with the personal dressing style and attitude of this particular 10 year old.  Hahaha.  Nevertheless, I tried my best (within reason) to help her find the perfect pair -- that I could live with also.  We went from DSW to Target and finally to Famous Footwear before we found the sought after shoes which hit 2 out of 3 of her criteria.  Winning!  Hahaha.

 Meet Grace's new shoes.

And here she is photo bombing me in her outfit for church that first Sunday wearing her new shoes.  I like how she went all out in dressing the part of a fashion-conscious pre-teen.   It's hard to see in the picture, but she's wearing a jean jacket with her outfit and she even did a side braid in her hair.  {Which she took out before we even got to church, but still.  Hahahaha.}

On the school front, MATH has become her thing {apparently}, and she has spent the last several days working on board games for school.  This one is called "Time for Math Conversions"  {smiley face}.  And since I always love it when the kids are totally engrossed in a school project, I just had to snap some pictures for the record's sake.  :)

And finally, our girl Grace got it into her brain on Monday after school that she really wanted to learn how to ride a bike.  So, in an effort to convince me that I should take her to Goodwill after the little ones were in bed, she went all out in her after dinner clean up efforts and cooperative behavior during Family Home Evening to really seal the deal.  And since I'm MORE than happy to reward such delightful behavior, I willingly set off on the hunt after Alex and Jane were in bed to help Grace find a cheap, used bike for her purposes.  And find one we did!  And learn how to ride it she did!  By the end of Tuesday evening, she had really gotten the hang of it, and is now a full-fledged bike rider.  :)  And an inspirational example to all.  Hahahaha.  J/K.  Although she has certainly inspired Sophie to get a bike now herself and learn to ride.  Perhaps once school is out we will get to work on that.

In the meantime, I'm off to the school for Jane's Kindergarten Sing and picnic {which is basically the equivalent of a Kindergarten graduation} and then it's off to the ultrasound to find out whether Team Lily or Team Isaac will be triumphant.  :)  Until next time...

Counting Down

The countdown is on!  Friday is the last day of school, and we're all wondering how in the world this year has gone by so fast.  With the end of year, have come all SORTS of activities and projects for the kids. So, to start my catching up, here is a recounting for ETHAN, since he's the one who has been hounding me to get a blog post up every night.  {Which clearly I have not been doing.}

Our resident 6th grader has been super busy.  Between finishing up school work -- he did "math cohort" this year, which essentially squeezed 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math into one year -- working on group projects, and participating in "graduation" type activities, he's had a lot going on.  Not to mention, he's a budding landscape artist.  Hahaha.  Just kidding, just kidding.  BUT, I will say that this kid is one incredibly hard worker.  Give him a project and he is all over it.  A couple of weeks ago, once I was out of the first trimester, I started feeling better almost immediately and decided that it was the PERFECT time to tackle all the yard work that had piled up and was in dire need of tackling. Ethan was my right hand man, and ripped out ugly and dead bushes in the front yard while I pruned the overgrown, non-tree-looking, Japanese magnolia tree that was looking woefully ungroomed on the corner of the house.  It took quite a bit of muscle, but he ripped those eyesores out, and helped to prep the ground for the new plants and bushes I had bought to take their place.

 We think these were planted when the house was built over a decade ago, so the roots went pretty deep.  It took quite a bit of effort to get everything out.

 Don't let this face fool you -- he was LOVING it.  He needs a purpose to function.  :)

 One down, three to go!  {Not counting the two barberry bushes he already pulled by the front doorstep.}

 Some of the detritus.

And the final blank slate.

With the help of the missionaries on the Saturday before Mother's Day, we got the new Hydrangea Bushes, peonies, and gardenia bush planted, and the rest of the beds mulched.  It was quite the task, but I'm super excited for my new plants. :)

Little Lime "Hardy Hydrangeas" waiting to be put in the bed.

 "Sarah Bernhardt" Peony, ready to go in.

{We still need a couple more bags of mulch -- it always takes more than I think it will.}

 Ethan and I were both quite upset that I didn't take any true "Before" pictures of the front yard.  I'm especially mad at myself for not snapping a picture of the overgrown column of leaves and branches that had taken the place of that tree in the corner.  The "After" is not quite as impressive when you can't see how terrible it looked before!

Meanwhile, this picture doesn't do justice to the scale of this pile of branches that I sawed off while pruning the tree.

Up next?  The all-district 6th grade Skate Party last Monday night.  The purpose of this event was to bring all the 6th graders from all the different elementary schools together to help them mix and mingle before being thrown together at the Junior High next year in 7th grade.  What actually happened was that most of the kids still stuck with the people they knew from their own school, and didn't mingle with others all that much.  Hahaha.  Even though there was a get-to-know-you scavenger hunt with major cash prizes on the line!  Siblings were invited to attend with the 6th graders, but much to the dismay {and that's understatement} of Sophie on down, I only brought Grace with me.  Haha.  And to be honest, even with those older two, I spent the majority of the evening worried we were going to end up at the hospital with a buckle fracture thanks to their lack of skill on the skates, and the general chaos and commotion of the rink.

I have to give Ethan some credit for a valiant effort exerted out there on the skate floor, but I think he quickly realized it's a lot trickier to get the hang of than he thought.  Grace, meanwhile, spent the bulk of her time in the practice area on the other side of the rink wall, working on building up her confidence {and competence} to get out there and hang with the big dogs.  All in all, it was a night to remember.  Hahahaha.
The very next day, Ethan's "Desktop Country" finally made it's debut.  With a few other boys in his class, he researched Uruguay and put together a project and a presentation to showcase to the rest of the school and the parents and it was quite impressive!  I've never been the hugest fan, personally, of group projects, but Ethan seemed to really enjoy working with his friends, and they did a great job together.

 Dressing up was optional, but I know Ethan was a little upset with himself for not going all out like his group mates.  ;)

The last thing to document is Ethan's final magic performance in the school talent show, along with the 6th grade singing performance that closed out the show.  The whole talent show was quite entertaining, and I know Ethan was glad that we all showed up -- even though ALL of the younger ones were majorly melting down that day and really should have stayed home with me to go to bed early.

 Waiting in the wings to do some magic.

 Singing one of their songs.

And filing of the stage with his friends.

And that is pretty much that!!  Ethan's graduation -- or "Recognition Night" as they call it -- is Wednesday evening, and he's super stoked that he was chosen to do one of the introduction speeches for the night.  They had to submit their speeches a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say I was kind of really impressed when I read over his!  Hahaha.  I know I shouldn't be so surprised by that, but I'm still getting used to this idea that my kids are getting older and even though they've ALWAYS had opinions on things, it's kind of really cool to see them able to express themselves more coherently and intelligently.  If that even makes sense.  When I asked him how he came up with his speeches, he told me that he just googled "inspirational quotes" for his starting point and went from there.  Hahaha.  This was made all the more hilarious to me by the "duh-how-ELSE-would-I-have-done-it" tone of voice that was used to convey the response to me.  Hahaha.  In all seriousness, though, I'm super proud him and can't wait to celebrate his accomplishments this Wednesday night.  :)  {I'll post the speech as soon as he gets me a copy of it.  And just as a disclaimer, when we're talking about a speech, what we're really talking about is a long-ish paragraph -- not a full-on address. ;)  }

A Mother's Day

My brain is seriously scrambled trying to keep everything straight for end-of-the-year stuff for the kids!  Our calendar is packed with multiple items for pretty much every day of the last two weeks of school.  Blogging may be lagging a bit as we have stuff happening a lot of evenings as well.  :(

BUT, to back track to the weekend, I can't let another day go by without documenting the best Mother's Day ever!!  :)  Just what made it so great this year?  Well, aside from my ALWAYS low standards and expectations, I think this was the first year that certain children took it upon themselves to do something for me of their own free will and volition!  It was epic.  Also epic?  The juxtaposition of the absolute freak out meltdowns that ALSO occurred intermittently throughout my big day.  Haha.  At one point on Sunday morning -- after I had already been showered with cards and love and admiration -- every single kid was crying or fighting or trying to attack someone, mere minutes after finishing Scripture Time and family prayers and hugs.  I was literally laughing out loud to see the cartoonish scrambling going on around me in a circle.  I felt like I was in the middle of a Tom & Jerry episode, where the cat and the mouse are chasing each other around in a circle that kicks up a cloud of blinding dust.  It was nuts.

Mother's Day 2015

But, mostly it was still a great day.  Even though Scott's allergies are always KILLING him this time of year, he went above and beyond to try and make sure I was celebrated the whole weekend long.  We got yard work, planting, and mulching done on Saturday morning (thanks to help from the missionaries), and then in the afternoon we went out to eat for an early dinner without the kids.  Sunday morning brought me my bevy of creative cards and the evening ended off with Grace voluntarily giving me one more hug and an "I love you" at bedtime.  She literally called out to me to "wait!" as I was leaving her room, so that she could jump up and give me some love.  That Grace.  Our ever-surprising surprise.  She was also the driving force behind all the younger kids (and herself) producing my assortment of sweet cards.  :)

 Alex drew me a rainbow and a "muddy puddle."  Hahahaha.  Not pictured are the 3 other muddy puddles he drew for me on another "card."  :)

 A Grace Original Poem

 Sophie brought me my hat afterwards, to help me relax.  Hahahaha.

All in all, it was a good weekend!  Stay tuned to see if I can catch up and recount all the end-of-year happenings that have already happened and will be happening over the next several days...

 My flowers from Scott

 Dinner Relfie.  Haha.

{And we can't forget the Cards/Projects made at school:}

 Ethan thinks I'm the bestest mom ever!!  This was refreshing news.  :)

 AND he thinks I'm so nice to him!  I really should frame this and hang it in my room.

 And to close, here is the most self-aware and touching letter I've ever received from an 8 year old:
"Dear Mom, I love you because you are awesome.  You always are so nice.  When I'm mad, I don't mean all the things that I say, I just need to let the anger out, and I really do love you.  You try to find time to do fun stuff with us all the time.  Like when we went to Great Wolf Lodge.  You buy food for us and clothes.  You are the best mom ever and the nicest!!!"

Until next time!
