Fire Pit Fail

Earlier today, I came up with the perfect idea for how to spend our Friday night.  (Especially since tomorrow it's supposed to turn really cold again and possibly snow.)  So, even though Ethan put in his due protest that it was ridiculous to have a bonfire in January, I thought it would be really fun to finally put our fire pit to use!

After grabbing the rest of the fixings for hot dogs and s'mores at the grocery store, we got back home and tried to get that fire started.  Even though it was supposed to start raining this afternoon, the weather this evening was crisp and cool without a rain cloud in sight!  I set the younger kids to work gathering up a bunch of sticks and branches that were laying around the backyard and Ethan got to work helping me figure out how to start the fire.

By the time Scott got home from work, we had started to make SOME progress, but alas it was not to be.  To quote Ethan, "that was a complete waste of the last hour and a half of my life."  Hahaha.  Womp womp.  I'm pretty sure the problem was that the rain earlier this week had soaked the wood beyond burn-ability, but we gave it the old college try.

(We never could get the bigger sticks to catch.)

Thankfully, no one else was too disappointed and the oven came through in the clutch.  ;)  A few minutes under the broiler and the hot dogs were good to go.  And once the main course was complete, a simple 30 seconds under the broiler was all it took to finish off with some s'mores.  All in all, I think the night was salvaged, even if the fire pit WAS a fail for the night.  Next time we'll just have to be a little more prepared.  Hahaha.
