Seriously, though, I do have fairly legitimate excuses for why I'm only just now voting in 2008. The year 2000 was my first year of eligibility, but being a Sophomore at BYU, and not quite knowing how to do an absentee ballot for my home state of Louisiana, the election came and went without my contribution. When 2004 rolled around, I fully intended to exercise my patriotic duties, but then Grace decided to make her appearance a week early and was born the night before Election Day, and I didn't quite make it to the polling booth once again. So there you have it. Judge me if you must.
In other news, Grace is 4!
It's really quite impossible to get a decent picture of her. On Saturday we attempted to celebrate her birthday -- which for some reason, has sort of snuck up on us this year. Usually her birthdays are drawn out to the point of ridiculousness, and we end up celebrating for weeks on end. This year, however, everything was a bit of a last minute effort. While Scott took Ethan and Grace to gymnastics that morning, I ran to Wal-Mart to get her a present and some more decorations for her "party" as per Ethan's request. Even her cake was a last minute inspiration, thanks to the shirt Grace put on when she got back from gymnastics later that morning. She originally wanted a dog cake (which I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to make), so I was relieved when she changed her mind to Hello Kitty. The hardest part of making this cake was getting a thick enough layer of frosting on top so that the chocolate cake didn't show through. Oh, and keeping Grace from eating the frosting before it got on the cake, of course.

The party was merely a family affair, and Ethan made his OWN "decorations" for Grace down in the basement. Apparently he thought that a nice tic tac toe board on the wall was in order for the day.
The "X's" are made from blue painter's tape, and the "O's" were drawn on the wall with marker, because as Ethan said, he "couldn't figure out how to make circles with the tape."
While Grace was SUPER excited about her birthday present...

Scott was NOT so excited about her birthday present, and has forbidden playdough to ever come into the house again...
(Rest in Peace little playdough set)

So, there you have it -- the anatomy of a birthday party in our household. I think Grace had a good day. All I know is that the older she gets, the more I'm realizing that having a birthday fall on the day after Halloween is not necessarily a good thing for my sanity. The children have been on an all-out sugar high for the last week, and this weekend was a nightmare of epic proportions with regards to their behavior to each other and to their parents. And don't even get me started on the Time Change. Who even thought that thing up ANYWAY? All it has meant for us the last few days is that Grace now wakes us up wanting breakfast at 5:30 in the morning instead of 6:30, and it gets dark so early in the evening that I feel like its 10 o'clock at night when in reality its only 7, thus making me feel like I'm being gypped out of my evenings. Combine all that with the fact that not a night goes by where one or more of the kids doesn't wake up at some point needing me, and I am EXHAUSTED. And sick of having to do breathing treatments. (Just thought I'd throw that in there).
I'll close with a couple more pictures and a quip from Scott.
Grace is a hippie.
Sophie is asthmatic.
And finally --
said SCOTT to Ethan who was loudly making noises and picking on the girls all during dinner tonight: "Why do you do things to bug me so much?"
There you have it folks. Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.
post script -- Scott would like his objections to be stated that he is not as a bad a father as this last quote would suggest.

cool hello kitty cake! i have no idea how you come up with that and how you get the shapes right!!
happy b-day grace. you truly are a crack up. your belated present is in the air on its way to cincinappy.
p.s. i like your giant sofa pillows!
and p.p.s. you didn't comment that you were mad that Ethan drew circles on the wall with marker???
that is what the mr. clean magic eraser is for, my friend.
Tell Scott I don't think he is a bad father, just human. Your kids make me laugh.
Wow, Grace is four?!?! That is so crazy. And she is awesome, by the way. Soooo funny!
And I can't believe this is the first time you've voted. How did I not know that? Congrats on stepping up and embracing your citizenship! :-)
And Scott's last comment is freaking hilarious. I think once you actually have kids, comments like that don't seem so bad. Yea for the Creers! You guys should have your own reality show.
LOL at Scott's comment.
And I totally agree about the post halloween birthdays--we have an extra day but it really has meant way too much sugar in our house the last 2 weeks. We had the missionaries over last night and instead of making something for dessert, which I usually do for them, I made them eat birthday party leftovers-- the unfrosted round cake that was left after baking the donkey, and the leftover frosting (which was too cold to spread on the cake) and the assortment of ice creams. A mishmash of dessert, but I'm happy that we now only have a little vanilla ice cream left, so I'm no longer tempted by all the sweets.
Great job on voting this year. And I'm impressed with that cute Hello Kitty cake! Love it.
I think you need to move to Arizona where we don't have daylight savings time.
as always, i love your posts. the cake looks great. i have a love/hate relationship with play-doh. and we have those same pj's sophie is wearing.
I do not allow play dough in my house anymore either. I can't believe how much of a mess it can make. I figure they can get play dough time at nursery and preschool.
This was my first time voting too! Love the pictures, especially cute little Sophie the asthmatic - poor thing. :( I love your writing style - always so smart, honest, and funny.
THANK YOU for making me feel better! I have been having a rough month and reading about how you never get enough sleep, etc made me feel more human! By the way, I laughed so hard reading this! Love it!
Oh that tic tac toe on the wall is hilarious. I'm tired og breathing treatments too. And fearing that I might be giving them to two boys pretty soon.
Hey girl! Thanks so much for your comment on my blog, it was really sweet and kindof what I needed to hear that day! I was in a bummer of a mood so thanks!
I love the hello kitty cake!! Do you freeze them before you frost, it helps. Also, if you take a can of store bought frosting and beat it with an electric mixer, it fluffs the frosting so you have twice as much!
Congrats on voting. I enjoy Grace's outfits/dress ups, they are always a surprise. Major props to you and your cakes. I don't have a clue on how to make any type of cake that isn't in a 9x13 pan.
That cake looks awesome, good work! We have 2 birthdays right after Halloween, and of course we have to have birthday cakes! The sugar high is ridiculous, we just make sure to have protein packed meals to try and balance it out a bit. :) That tic-tac-toe on the wall thing was great--of course it's always fun & entertaining when it's at somebody else's house! Oh, and guess what? The first time I voted was the Bush/Gore election (2000) and we got to go to the front of the line because I was in labor. Jeremy said, "We should try this at Disney World!". There is no way I would have done it if she had been born right before the election, but she came the next morning. Good job voting! :)
I love reading your blog because despite the crazy life our kids leave you always have something positive and funny to say. The Hello Kitty cake is so cute. I had to laugh at the hair photo. My boys are the same way.
