First we need a picture of the scene of the crime:
And of course, the weapon:
And now for the story.
Today has been a rough day. Sophie still has "staying asleep" issues when put down, so the bulk of my morning has been spent rocking and rocking and rocking her to sleep. At lunch time I gave up trying to get her to sleep so that I could make the kids' sandwiches. When they were done, I resumed the rocking while watching Tyler's Ultimate: Sunday Dinner on the Food Network. Ethan and Grace had disappeared off to the laundry room, where they've been ensconcing themselves lately to watch movies that grandma checked out from the library for them on the TV/VCR combo in there.
About 20 minutes later, Sophie was asleep and I attempted to put her down once again. I decided now was a good time to go and put Grace down in her crib for naptime before Sophie woke up again and needed me to rock her some more. As I'm walking down the hall to the laundry room, I hear these "snip, snip" sounds and I think "maybe Ethan's cutting some paper in there." Not a farfetched idea, because one of his favorite "projects" to do is cutting out scraps of paper and glueing them to other scraps of paper.
However, what I found instead was Ethan standing on the folding chair snipping away at Grace's hair while Grace is sitting in the other chair like she's in a hair salon or something, clutching her care bear and a picture that Ethan had colored for her.
Well, I started screaming. And pretty much scared them to death. Evidenced by the fact that Ethan didn't even try to fight me when I told him to go to his room and stay there until I had calmed down.
Here are pictures of Ethan's handiwork:
And I thought growing out her bangs was taking forever. This will take YEARS to grow back out. I kid you not! She has the slowest growing hair ever! And I know it shouldn't be that big a deal, because come on, what parent DOESN'T have a child that has taken a pair of scissors to their hair? But, the thing is -- Grace's hair was finally starting to grow out. And it looked so pretty on Sunday when it was blow dried and round brushed out. Now she looks like a street urchin! Okay, maybe not that bad, but it certainly doesn't help her ragamuffin-look tendencies.
Once I had calmed down, I went back to Ethan's room where he was laying on the bed crying with his blanket and the lights off, and I felt HORRIBLE. Poor little thing. I just need to remember that he's only 3. I told him I was sorry for screaming and that I loved him and made him promise never to cut anyone's hair ever again. I asked him why he cut her hair and his response was that her hair was getting too long. After I hugged him and told him I was sorry again he said he wanted Grace so he "wouldn't be alone." How sad is that? So, of course I went and got her out of her crib for him and managed to get the pictures taken of her hair, and a couple of the two of them together.
At least they love each other:
And from the front you can hardly tell how bad it is, RIGHT?????

This was story was so good, I had to share with the girls at work.
its too bad that her hair just got sooo many compliments from easter.
poor little gracie!!
oh my gosh! i would die! we are still yet to have that happen in my house. i try to emphasize that only mommy ever cuts hair, but i'm sure our time at my house will come. if it makes you feel better, my friends and i played "beauty parlor" when i was 4 or 5 and cut one of my braids or ponytials (i'm not sure which, but i had really long hair) off to my shoulders. i guess it's just part of life!
Oh NOOOOOOOOOOO! I am so sorry! I know how sad you must be. As one who can appreciate slow growing hair.....I really truly feel for her/you. She's still adorable though and I love hoe Ethan asked for Grace so he wouldn't be alone. Too sweet!
I cut my beautiful long curly ponytails off right next to my head when I was three. My mom found the curls in the can before she found me. Garrett loves cutting and glueing scraps of paper also. Basically cutting anything with scissors. Inevitably the hair will be cut soon also.
I had a good laugh about this story! Don't worry though - my experience as a child was much worse. I let a neighbor get to my hair and the result was that my mom basically had to give me a buzz cut - it was that bad! So I have picture of me in my ballet costume with a buzz cut . . . . I survived though! At least Grace still has hair in the front -and short hair is in so maybe you could find someone to cut it really cute.
Oh my gosh! Totally been there! It is always such a shock to see your kids beautiful hair cut up. When L cut half of the hair on her head off I couldn't bring myself to fix the mess up job so she had weird hair for a WEEK! I think your kids are soooo cute though, personality totally makes up for the hair-do! PS Do you know who B. Spears is---laughed my rear off at that comment!
you could get her that cute new Bob-style hairdo...the one that is wedged in the back and longer in the front. She'll be right in style. I have talked to several moms lately that have been going through this same thing - maybe it's some kind of "spring fever" symptom. Good luck Jessica.
Oh, Jessica, I am so sorry about this. Just the thought of J's hair being cut off makes me a little sick to my stomach. I imagine that's what you felt when you saw this.
Luckily, it's not the end of the world it will eventually grow back. Grace is beautiful with short hair and long!
Too bad he didn't just try his own cause he looks cute with a buzz. She is still adorable. At least is wasn't her bangs cut right down.:)
Jessica,
very funny story even though it going to suck growing her hair back out. I too had to have my hair cut because I got gum stuck in it. At least your kids will have stories to tell when they are older. I love your diaper bag and dang girl...I am impressed with Scott.
thanks for all the condolences! my plan right now is to give it about a week to grow a little more and then take her to my hairstylist and see if she can create something cute out of it. i'm thinking something kind of like victoria beckham's current do?
and the b. spears comment is either from my mom or my youngest sister amy. i'm pretty sure its from amy, though.
seriously? i was totally thinking b. spears was emily...
anyway, i am all about the new victoria beckham do. i think this is a blessing in disguise! go for it! i was actually thinking about something like that for myself. maybe you can send ethan down to alabama sometime.
Gosh Jessica!!! I am feeling for you right now!! I can't believe he cut her hair and I am feeling so bad that you are sleeping on the couch with the swing next to you. That's rough! I hope sophie gets better at sleeping soon!!Newborns can be so tough and it doesn't help to have 2 other little ones. Good luck. I really thought the hair story was funny but know i would have been furious if ethan did that to lucy.
That picture of them together is precious, and you can't even tell from the front. This will be one of those stories you can laugh about later.
I think you're right, too...I think practically everyone has a story about scissors and hair. At least you found them before more damage was done! :)
p.s. I loved his comment re: being with Grace, too. That is so sweet.
Well, since I didn't notice you posted. Can you laugh about it now? I probably would have FREAKED. I guess lucky for me Taylor would take them away since she is almost ten and if it was my boys I would just buzz it off.
How did Grace's haricut turn out?
