January Jubilee

With the month almost over, I figured it was time for an update with all the goings on of January.  Get ready for a super [SUPER] random assortment of info...

  • January Jubilee
The after-Christmas slump is real.  Knowing that January is typically the WORST for me personally, I decided to take things into my own hands this year and create something to be excited about!  I'm pretty sure the kids were laughing at me all month long and not thinking I was actually serious about it, but I most certainly was.  Hahaha.  I designated the last Saturday of January to be our First Month Bash and put it on the calendar to make it official.  The name of our family celebration evolved over the last couple of weeks until we finally landed on January Jubilee and it stuck.  For our big day, we decided to head to the Trampoline Park and the kids had a blast.  For the most part.  Ethan may or may not have sprained his foot/ankle when landing wrong on a back flip, so that put a damper on things towards the end.  But we finished up our Jubilee with slushes from Sonic and I think we've started a new tradition.  :)

  • Driver's Permit
Dun Duh Dun Dun Dun!  Grace has her driver's permit, y'all!  She may have failed the written test the first time around, but she totally nailed it on the second.  Hahaha.  In theory, she can go and take the driving skills portion of the test in 30 days, but I think she's going to need a little more practice than that.  She is definitely improving, though!  Haha.  The last week has consisted of a daily barrage of begging for more time to practice and I can definitely say she is much, much better today than she was on Day 1.  Granted we still haven't taken to the real roads -- other than a nerve wracking stretch on Day 1 before pulling over into a cul de sac for me to take the wheel -- but the neighborhood has provided ample opportunities for her to practice her skills.

  • B-Day Pictures
Ever since Ethan was born, I have been SO good about getting a picture taken of the kids each year of their lives.  Until the last two years that is.  Between the move and the upheaval and stress that preceded it and continued to linger afterwards, taking everyone's birthday portraits did not even make it onto my priorities list.  And that makes me really sad!!  So, I spent some time last week culling through the last two years of pictures to find 2 for each of them.  And even though most of the these options are a far cry from what I wish I would have taken, I'd still rather have something than nothing.  ðŸ˜‰

2018-2019

  • Personal Development
I'm so excited about the church's new program for children and for youth!  So much so, that I decided to jump on the bandwagon as well.  Hahahaha.  At the beginning of the month, we spent a family home evening coming up with each of our goals in each of the categories.  And since I love to be extra, I went ahead and put it on a poster board and bedazzled it with some glitter glue.  Hahahaha.

  • Book of Mormon
With the "Come, Follow Me" curriculum being the Book of Mormon this year, we are challenging ourselves as a family to read the whole book, cover to cover, by the end of the year.  And since everything is more fun with a poster board, I went ahead and re-created a reading tracker that I used a few years ago and supersized it on the board.  We each have a night that is our night to read, and then when we're done, we get to color in that chapter on the board.  It has been a lot more successful than I expected it to be.  Of course we're only 1 month in, but I'm optimistic that we can keep it up for the next 11!

  • Road Trip Planning
This summer's road trip is going to be EPIC!!!  Hahaha.  This year we're going to Lasso the South and it's going to be amazing.  A few pit stops that I've tentatively put on the itinerary are: Memphis, Hilton Head, Dollywood, Charleston, and Savannah.  Stay tuned for more planning.
  • 40 Before 40 Check-in
You guys!  I've got one month left to wrap up my 40 Before 40 List!  I've been plugging away at it in fits and starts for the last year, but it's been a bit since I've pulled out the actual list and assessed where I'm at.  So yesterday, I printed out my list and started to take stock.  And you know what?  I was pleasantly surprised to see that I've accomplished a lot more than I thought!  I'll do a full run down of the details of each item once my birthday rolls around, but for now I can confidently say that I should be able to check at least 30 out of the 40 off my list.

(24 done, 6 in progress, 5 not gonna happen, 5 maybes.)

  • Sleep Charts
And finally, the biggest (?) excitement of the month has been the semi-success of a couple of sleep charts for Alex and Isaac!  I think it's been pretty well documented that Isaac has been a terrible sleeper from the very beginning.  In all honesty, I'd say that Isaac winds up in our room/bed in the middle of the night about 96% of the time.  That's a whole lot of disrupted sleep on my part.  And then times that by 4+ years.  Doh!  Adding to that fun mix is the fact that more nights than not, Alex has been joining him in our room at some point in the night, too.  Something clearly needs to be done.  Since Alex has always been HIGHLY motivated by sticker charts, I thought I'd go ahead and whip up one for each of them!  And guess what??  It's kind of working!!!  Hahahaha.  As expected, Alex has not missed a single night's worth of stickers.  Isaac is a little more hit or miss, but he is definitely staying in his bed all night a LOT more than he has in the past.  I'm hoping that by the time they've both filled up their charts, they will have formed the life-long habit of staying in their own beds at night.  A mom can always dream, right??  Hahahaha.

And that's all folks! Peace out [almost] on January.  ðŸ’—

Batteries Not Inclunded

{No.  That's not a typo.  Or at least, it's not MY typo.  Hahahahahaha.}

We took advantage of today being the elementary school's "Spirit Day" at Chuck E. Cheese, and spent a good couple of hours joining the masses at everyone's favorite place on earth this afternoon! {We've seriously given this Chuck E. Cheese so much business in the short year and a half we've been here.}

It was quite the sweet outing -- after getting the kids a couple of pizzas and supplying two 90-minute cards for the games, Scott and I were essentially able to kick back and relax in a booth while they scurried to and fro accruing as many tickets as possible with their time.  And boy did they make good use of their time!  In a RECORD setting bonanza, they managed to rack up almost 6,000 tickets by the time their cards ran out.  ðŸ˜³  The pile of tickets was so ginormous, we had the attention of almost everyone who passed by the ticket muncher.  And there may have even been pictures snapped by complete strangers.  It probably took 20 minutes just to get our ticket tally!

To everyone's delight, the worker behind the prize counter rounded up our 5,742 tickets to an even 6,000 and the kids excitedly picked out a game {Walking Trash Can} and then divvied up the remaining tickets to get some cotton candy and a giant "soccer ball."  After spending the last ticket, everyone left as happy campers.  ðŸ˜Š   Even though the game ended up being a bust -- even with trying two different sets of batteries, we never could get the trash can to walk -- the memories made were priceless and the day was a success in my book.  ðŸ˜‰

(Perhaps "batteries 'not inclunded'" should have been our first clue.  Hahahahaha.)

Another Brace Face

Alex joined the ranks of the brace faces today!  Hahaha.   Like Sophie, he's going to do a 2 phase treatment.  And while I'm not quite sure why Sophie's needed to be split into 2 phases, I totally understand why Alex needs to start this early.  {Essentially, he doesn't have enough space for all his permanent molars to come in.  Right now -- on each side of his mouth -- there are only 1 1/2 spaces for 3 teeth to fit in.  So he now has brackets on his 6 front teeth on top and an expander to hopefully expand his palette and make some space.}

Way back at the beginning of December, I took him in for his initial scans.  The technology these days is kind of amazing and it was cool to see them creating a 3-D model with essentially a toothbrush sized wand taking pictures of every facet of his teeth.  We had to put things on pause while the Christmas/New Year's holidays were taking center stage, but last week we went back in for rubber band "spacers" to be put on his back molars (for the expander to fit in more comfortably when they're taken out) and today was the day for the whole shebang!

(This is the only "Before" picture he would let me take.)

The process from start to finish wasn't too long and in the end, I'm pretty sure Alex was kind of excited about this new phase of life.  ;)  Other than his teeth being a little sore, I don't think I've heard a single complaint!  Now that we've got orthodontia to deal with, however, I'm going to be hounding him much more than usual about making sure he gets his teeth good and brushed everyday and I'm sure that will bring LOTS of complaints my way.  Hahahaha.  He'll be in these braces for about a year and then I think they'll wait until all his baby teeth are gone before starting phase 2.   {And speaking of phase 2 -- Sophie just started hers last week.  I didn't get any pictures, but I'm sure she'll love to pose for me one of these days.  Hahahaha.}

And that's a wrap, folks!  Nothing else super exciting is going on over here, other than the fact the weather has been delightfully in the 50s and 60s for the past few days.  The only downside to that, though, is I'm pretty sure all the bulbs I planted in the fall are thinking it's springtime already and are starting to poke their little heads out.  Hopefully they won't be ruined before the REAL spring is here.  :)

(Unrelated to braces, but Alex REALLY wanted me to take some pictures of his LEGO building skills.)

(He really wanted to take a picture of the finished product to show his cousin, Henry.)

Hello 2020!

Christmas break is officially OVER.  ðŸ˜¢  The kids go back to school tomorrow and I have to admit I'm not ready for it!  The last three weeks have been such a glorious blur of staying up too late, not stressing about getting kids in bed, and sleeping in as long as we can.  But the show must go on, and the kids still have a few more months to get through before we can reconvene for summer break.  :)

This year, like last, we spent New Year's with the cousins in Indiana.  It was an absolutely packed house and I loved it!  Josh got back from his mission at the beginning of December, so Kristin had all 6 of her kids home for the holidays, plus a daughter-in-law, plus Kristin and Scott's parents.  And our 6 kids plus us, of course.  Hahaha.  Seriously, it was such a full house and SO MUCH FUN.  Having a big family certainly comes with its own unique challenges, but it's times like this that make it so worth it!  :)

New Year's Eve itself wasn't overly momentous, but everyone stayed up to ring in the new year regardless.  (Even Isaac.  Since his sleeping habits are atrocious.)  Our last few days together were spent going to a couple more movies, playing lots and lots of games (Balderdash was a favorite), and getting in a trip to the children's museum for nostalgia's sake.  Isaac was a huge fan of the last plan.  Hahaha.  We sadly had to say goodbye last Friday and started on our LONG drive home, which was thankfully broken up this time by a stop in our old stomping grounds for a very brief one night stay.  The youth from our ward back home were going on an extra special, overnight temple trip to St. Louis and since we'd be passing through on our way back anyway, we coordinated our drive home to coincide with their trip and dropped the older three off with the young men and young women.

They had a blast that Friday afternoon and evening with a trip to the zoo, a hop over to the science center, and a late night adventure at the City Museum.  (Sadly I have no pictures because I was not there.)  The next morning, Scott and I (and the younger 3) headed on home while the older three stayed behind with the youth for the temple portion of their trip.  In all honesty, it was a great way to make the drive home.  Three kids in a car is a lot easier than 6 kids in a car.  Hahahahaha.

Once we were all home, the kids were anxious to fill out our annual reflection sheets, so after whipping up a new template (because I couldn't find the old one anywhere on my computer) we settled down on Sunday evening to officially end the old year and ring in the new.  As always, I fully enjoyed reading everyone's reflections and recaps, and I can also authoritatively say that this year's forecast is looking even brighter than last year's.  ;)
