Wingardiam Leviosa!

It took five years of mocking resistance before I caved in and gave Harry Potter a shot, but once I did, I fell in love.  But as karma would have it, I have met resistance from almost ALL of my children with regards to reading the {full} series of books.  Ethan is the only one who has stuck with them until the very end, but even he only started reading them in order to be able to watch the movies when he was younger.  I would say it wasn't until he got to book 5 or 6 that he was truly hooked and wanted to finish the series to find out what happened.  Grace and Sophie have both started -- and stopped -- the series, and I've been trying to get Jane to start it with me all summer, with no luck.  So I can't even describe how thrilled I was a few nights ago, when Jane finally agreed to start reading the first book with me at bedtime!  And she's even been reading a bit on her own!  And she seems to actually be liking it!!!  Hahaha.  The last couple of nights have been a treasure.  :)  Here's to hoping she loves the experience, too!

 Life Lessons from Harry Potter:

* Good will always triumph over evil

* Everything is made better with friends

* We are uniquely suited to overcome our greatest challenges

* Sometimes even bad guys can change their ways

* But true evil will always be evil

* We're never truly alone

* Life isn't always fair

* It takes brains, loyalty, and courage to overcome

* And finally -- LOVE is the most powerful force on earth

Jane's Got an iPod

Jane was the first one to finish our reading challenge this summer.  Her motivation from the very start?  Earning money to buy the "family iPod" to have for her very own.  :)

Last week, we finally made that magic happen.  After carefully searching Amazon for different case options, she used her hard-earned money to order her favorite one, and then officially purchased the family iPod from me.  {The "family iPod" is the one I bought off of Ethan when he got his new one, so that we'd have an extra electronic device in the car for our road trip this summer.}  When her case came in the mail, she was beyond excited.  Grace wasted no time in taking her under her wing to set everything up (and commandeer the device for the afternoon) and Jane wasted no time in getting grounded from the iPod by the time the weekend rolled around.  Hahaha.  Apparently, a review of our house electronic rules is in order.  Because playing games non-stop, around the clock is not really gonna work.

Hopefully, once the novelty wears off, it won't be such a temptation to play on it 24/7 and I won't need to confiscate it every weekend. ;)

She sure looks happy, though.  :)

Fun Run

Another fun festival and 5K has come and gone for the kids' school!  Saturday was the big day, and in a change of course {literally -- it was held at a different park and a weekend earlier than usual}, the afternoon of the race beamed sunny and bright.  The past two years that we've gone, the weather was cold and miserable, so this was a nice change of pace.  Sort of.  Hahaha.  In actuality, it was blazing hot and the humidity was nothing to sneeze at, so running 3.1 miles at 4 PM was not for the faint of heart.

 S-T-R-E-T-C-H!

I volunteered my services as "photographer" from 3-5, so we were there on the scene MUCH earlier this year than last -- much to the relief of certain children.  Hahaha.  Last year we arrived a couple minutes into the race, and the older three had to scramble to make up time and join the frey.  This year, they were lined up at the front of the pack, ready to run as soon as the starting gun went off.  Scott ran with Jane, and while I scrambled to and fro trying to get pictures taken for the school, a friend from our neighborhood and ward kept an eye on Alex and Isaac for me.

 Sophie with some of her friends.

 Grace with a few of hers.

 The 6th Graders (plus a few other sneak-ins -- like Sophie.  Hahaha.)

 And they're off!

Even if I hadn't already run 9 miles earlier that morning, I still wouldn't have wanted to run a 5K in that heat!  Walking around in the blazing sun, lugging the camera around, was challenging enough.  Hahaha.  It was kind of fun, though, snapping pictures of the festivities and seeing each of my own kids (and Scott) in action on the race course.  The results of the race were almost identical to years past, with Ethan and Sophie winning for their age groups, Grace losing steam and motivation when she realized she didn't have a big group of friends running with her, and Jane dropping out midway through the race because she was too hot and tired.  :)

Once the running was over, the kids were excited to join in the festival fun, where the cake walk and bouncy houses were the biggest hits.  After FINALLY winning at the cake walk {I think he said it took 20 minutes of playing before his number was called}, Ethan took over the last shift at the inflatable slide where he finished off a full and busy day of service hours for National Junior Honor Society.  {He also participated in a food drive pick-up in the morning as well as helped for a couple of hours with setting up tables and tents for the festival before it started. I think he's pretty close to having all his service hours done at this point.}

Meanwhile, after 3 hours of walking around in the heat, I was ready to go!  After convincing the kids that we needed to get a move on, we made it back home just in time for me and the older girls to get changed and ready to go to the church for dinner and dessert before the Women's Session of Conference was broadcast later that evening.  Needless to say, it was a packed and busy Saturday!

Winning!

 {Duh.}

Fastest girl in the 4th grade!  :)

Backstory

My entire day was made this evening when I discovered a notebook filled with "backstories" on all of the "exchange student" characters that Grace and Sophie have been creating lately.  Here's everything you need to know about "Maisiey Daniella Parks":

  • Her name (after several drafts) is apparently spelled "M-A-I-S-I-E-Y."
  • She has two brothers -- Jax Daniel Park, who is in 10th grade and has a girlfriend named Lexi Amilea Linton; and Colten Danny Parks, who is in 8th grade and MYSTERIOUS and always plays sports.
  • Her dad, Asher Luther, is an accountant and her mom, Hazel Wilson, is a lawyer; her dog, Espresso, is black/brown and is small, famous, and a rescue dog.  Hahahahahaha.

  • Maisiey Daniella Parks is in 6th grade.
  • Her best friends are: Paisley, Trinity, Serenity, Arwin, Bennett, Kaden, Mathew, Lukas, and Grace of course.
  • Her hobbies include: hockey (Wombats, #4); lacrosse (Pink Ladies, #4), figure skating (single, #1024, Coach Mel); babysitting; designing; and shopping, acting, singing.
  • She has an iPod 5 and her favorite apps are: Color Switch; Rolling Sky; Musically; Snap Chat; Instagram; Fit the Fat 2; Charles; Minecraft; oh and shopping apps.

  • Favorite books are: Wonder, Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner, Echo, Percy Jackson, and magazines
  • Apparently she burns, not tans.
  • And her favorites are:  Color -- Blue/Purple; Book -- Wonder; Food -- Pasta; Season -- Fall; Show -- Victorious/Back Stage; Sport -- Lacrosse

Hahahahahahahahaha hahahahaha.  The level of detail is so oddly specific and over the top that it's amazing.  I love everything about it.  My top favorite things about this back story are that all the siblings' middle names are variations of the name "Daniel"; her rescue dog is famous; her quartet of girl friends are named Paisley, Trinity, Serenity, and Arwin; and she doesn't tan, she just burns.  Hahahahaha.  Those kids.  I can't wait to see what they come up with next.   :)

Picture of the Week

Little known fact -- Isaac is kind of a TV bug.  He has been since birth practically.  His earliest bonding moments with Scott were swaddled in his arms and watching basketball on TV.  It's not like he's parked in front of the television all day, every day, but it's kind of hilarious to see how captivated he is when the kids are watching a show.  And since our house has been a regular sick bay for the last week, there has been a LOT more screen time happening around here than I usually like to have.  When I saw Isaac, sitting stock still and mesmerized by whatever Disney junior show Alex was watching on TV the other day, I just had to take a picture.  They grow up so fast!  Hahahahaha.

Cute little TV bug.

Amusements

Last week was a doozy!  I was sick with a sinus thing/head cold all week long, Alex came down with a {short-lived} fever on Wednesday after school, Jane came home early from school on Friday after throwing up at recess, and Sophie woke up in the middle of last night burning up with a fever, too.  Yay!!!  Hahaha.  Seriously, though.  I'm just biding my time, waiting for it to pass through every single kid.  Aren't WE a fun bunch?

Despite the various scattered ailments of various children over the weekend, we still managed to make Saturday a special day thanks to Ethan's home cross country meet, and DIVIDEND DAY at the amusement park in the afternoon!  Highlights of Ethan's race include a PR (!!!!) and the rain holding out the entire time we were there, and the only low light was that the junior high boys didn't run until noon -- making our day at the amusement park MUCH shorter than any of the kids would have liked.

After getting back from the meet, we made everyone eat some lunch really quick and then headed out (in two separate cars) to get our amusement on.  And yes, we let Jane go, too, even though she was still technically running a fever off and on all day.  Hashtag we'll just call this a don't judge me parenting moment.  It was 1:30 or 2:00 by the time we got to the park, and I think Scott carried Jane around half the time she was there, but despite her less than stellar health for the day, she was SOOOO excited to finally ride a couple of the "scarier" rides in kiddie land.  I'm not quite sure if the roller coasters were the BEST call for someone who wasn't feeling well, but I never heard her complain.  ;)  Alex surprised all of us by being FAR more adventurous than he was last year, and willingly and excitedly went on a couple of the bigger rides with Grace {still in the kiddie area} and ended up loving them!  I think he was pretty proud of himself.  :)

The rain held off once again throughout the afternoon (and into the evening), and we packed in as much as we could in the couple hours we were all there, before I took off with the younger ones and Scott stayed longer with Ethan and Grace who were excited to finally go over to the "real" rides and catch some thrills.  McDonald's on the way home seemed to make the younger crew happy, as did being able to watch a show or two once we were home before it was time for them to head up to bed.  I know Sophie in particular was pretty upset that she didn't get to stay longer, but she doesn't like the bigger rides, and I knew that Ethan and Grace would have no patience for that, especially since they always want Scott to ride with them, too.  Maybe next year, Sophie.  But then again, maybe not.  We all know MY feelings towards amusement park rides, so perhaps she's just inherited my genes.  Hahaha.  Nevertheless, it's always really fun to see how Dividend Day is the funnest day of the year for these kids.  :)

I thought I'd close with a few more amusements, presenting a series of pictures involving the most entertaining $10 Grace ever spent...
