the story of my life

Allow me a few moments of self-indulgent pity. So, today was basically the WORST. DAY. EVER. I know that my extremist tendencies make me a bit prone to hyperbole as it is, but rest assured that today COMPLETELY merits that distinction.

As I sit here typing, my tooth is still throbbing from the effects of going to the dentist this morning. What should have just been a quick (ha) dental visit to fill a couple of cavities turned into a nightmare of epic proportions. First of all, let me state that I HATE going to the dentist -- with the drill sounding worse than nails on a chalkboard, the numbness, the dentist asking questions and expecting an answer all while my mouth is full of dental instruments, the constant dryness of my mouth and inability to swallow while being worked on -- really there is nothing to like about it. Well, let's just say this morning was even worse than usual. Apparently the cavities were REALLY deep -- so LOTS of drilling was involved, and on one side my tooth was numb but my gums weren't -- resulting in moments of pain, and on the other side they hit a nerve and managed to slice open my lip with the metal band thingy that they put around the tooth as they're filling it -- more pain, and in the end the dentist told me that because the cavities were so deep I would most likely need to get root canals. As he was telling me this, my tooth on the left side was already starting to throb and I couldn't close my mouth and let my tongue or bottom teeth touch it because it kept sending sharp, shooting pains through the tooth. Yea! Well, that was a bad sign, clearly, so the doctor gave me another shot to numb things up better, and started drilling again to do a pulpotomy. Double yea! Now I need to schedule a root canal with an endodentist ASAP to fix this tooth.

So, here we are at the end of the day. My tooth has been throbbing all day long, I still can't touch my teeth together -- thus ruling out any kind of chewing for food, and I don't think Tylenol with Codeine does a THING for pain.

And while I'm pitying myself here, I'm starting to get paranoid that I might be developing gestational diabetes due to my unexplained and epic weight gain over the last few days and weeks, not to mention my eyes have been bothering me whenever I've worn my contacts over the last month and my eye doctor said it would really be best if I just wore my glasses till after I deliver this baby. Triple yea! Anybody want to trade lives with me? Hahaha.

Alright, gripefest over. Here are the rest of the happenings over the last few weeks:

Easter was a lot of fun. Scott had Good Friday off, so we made a quick trip over to visit his sister Kristin and her family on Thursday night and came back on Friday evening just in time to welcome my mom and Amy and Jacob. They came up for a quick trip for their Spring Break and it was a blast. Sarah came down with baby Eleanor to hang out with us on Monday, and then everyone left to go back home on Wednesday. Even though we didn't exactly have Springy weather to enjoy the Spring Break, it was still a lot of fun. Ethan was in Super Nintendo heaven the whole time, and all the kids loved having Eleanor here. Almost too much. I'm worried about poor baby Jane being suffocated by their love once she's here!

The kids started posing on the stairs before I even realized what they were doing. I guess they figured we took pictures before coming down to see what Santa brought, so the Easter Bunny deserves the same respect. Hahaha.

The obligatory Easter outfit shot. Let's just say rushing for 9 o'clock church cramped its style a bit.

Of course it wouldn't be my life if the fun we had while the family was here weren't tempered by a bit of bad luck. When everyone was leaving Wednesday morning, the kids and I went out to see them off and say good-bye. Well, someone locked the door on the way out and left all of us out in the cold. Sarah had already left, but my mom was still in the driveway which was very fortunate because I didn't even have real shoes on much less my cell phone. Of course, I'm the only one with the house key so a call to Scott only served useful in Googling a locksmith, and so 25 minutes and 65 bucks later, we were back in the house! Sarah showed up about 10 minutes into our wait because she left some stuff at the house and we all piled into mom's minivan for a little more family bonding:

Sidenote: When "Mr. Lock" came, he asked to see ID when I gave him the check. After looking at my driver's license he commented "you look different." Oh gee, thanks. You mean I don't look the same 7 years and 3 1/2 children later, 30 pounds heavier, and sporting my awesome glasses and ungroomed and unruly tresses? Just what every pregnant woman wants to hear.

To end on a fun and happy note, here is a picture of my shopping success at the mall last night before all my troubles started this morning:

After making fabulous use of my Gymbucks, reward cards, and massive winter clearance sales, I scored all of these clothes for Jane for ... (drumroll please) 50 cents! You would think that already having 2 girls would mean we're set for clothes for this little one but you would think wrong. For one thing neither Grace nor Sophie was a summer baby, and for another thing a lot of their play clothes are kind of trashed at this point. When I took stock of the girl clothes that are put away, I discovered that I have basically no winter clothes that will fit her for this year. All in all, it was a very successful trip.

And just for fun:
Here is Sophie's favorite perch.

Whenever I'm at the computer (which is probably too often), Sophie climbs up on the fireplace, pulls some paper out of the printer, and starts to color. She's funny.

Well, folks that's all. Tomorrow is another day, right?

ok, yuck about your teeth! im scared to go to the dentist, who knows what they will find!! the kiddies look so cute in their easter gear! i almost got you those poodle jammies at gymboree but it was making my head hurt to try and think of what size jane would be and some pushy lady was trying to get to the clearance rack. they make those stores way too small!

Ouch! I think the tooth phobia runs in the family. When I took Jacob to Urgent Care for his stitches on Thursday, he asked the doctor if the numbing was going to be like when he goes to the dentist. The doctor immediately responded, "whoa, don't compare this to the dentist...I can't even stand walking in there with the drill noises let alone the pain!"

So sorry Jessica. I didn't want to leave. To think I rushed back to conduct my YW training meeting for, drum role....ONE person! yep, all that worry and work. I even had to run to Tulane around 11pm because my printer wasn't working. Obviously, the stake won't schedule this during Easter break next year. The problem now is that I have to transmitt all of this information to the units and their counselors via mail or email.

Hey, there is some good news though...Freddie called when we were out looking for surgical hose (for Jacob's slingshot) and he made an "A" on his Anatomy final. Way to go! Savor the high because your appointment for the dentist is Apr. 30 hahahaah

Sorry to hear about the tooth - I hope you feel better soon. I loved that your kids stopped at the stairs on Easter morning for a camera shot - too cute.

that is exactly what scarlett o'hara would say, tomorrow is another day!!! i'll just consider that a personal shout out to me.
and i'm sorry about the dentist. perhaps after your next visit you can get a baby sitter for the kids and go see 17 again by yourself. maybe even make it a double feature and see the hannah montana movie too. that should make the drilling seem like music.

Oh, wow, I can't even begin to say how sorry I feel for you and your teeth pain. I also HATE dentist trips and actually have to go this Friday after putting it off for, oh, 2 years. My teeth are ultra-sensitive so the cleanings and everything else are always painful, and it stays with me for days (even if I haven't had a cavity or anything!) Did I mention I scheduled this appt. the morning that we fly out to Costa Rica on an all-night flight? Yeah, I'm a glutton for punishment. Hope you get the root canal and everything fixed soon! Good luck!

p.s. I'm totally jealous of your baby clothes for 50 cents. A-mazing!

And....don't you hate it when you feel like they are gagging you and while spit is running into you throat you can't even swallow it and you get scared you're going to breath it in! Lets just say I hate the dentist too, and I have gotten a root canal. Just be prepared to have someone take care of your kids that day because it is going to be tough. Oh, and don't feel the little stump of your tooth that is left behind after they grind it down, it will gross you out! And for the record, you don't look bad at all ;)

SO sorry about the tooth trauma--I'm scared to go--its been over 2 years and I know that I've got something going on on the right side. Need to make that appt.

And how awesome are you with your gymboree shopping--very jealous, and a little jealous that you have another little girl to shop for--I keep seeing insanely cute baby clothes and want to buy them, but since i have no baby to shop for, there really isn't much point.

you've got gymboree SKILLS sister!!!

the kiddos look soooooooo cute in their Easter get-ups. Ethan looks like avery handsome little man, and i love Grace'e bangs tucked to the side in a clip. and i still get a kick out of seeing Sophie as a normal human being. because for the longest time (even well after sophie was born) it was always the Ethan & Grace show. poor Sophie was always in the hospital, under a verntilator, or under your shirt being fed...so nowhere around to be seen.

i'm glad you update your blog, b/c i get to see little Sophie's peronsality develop. she seems really funny and like she loves her brother and sister. you're right there is gonna be lots of love for little baby Jane when she get here.

and i'm pretty freaked out about my dentist appointment in a couple weeks, be in my check up last week, the dentist told me "get ready, we have lots of work to do." awesome. thanks doc. its sad, that i waste so much energy wondering if i'm getting ripped of my dentist, telling me i need more work done than is neccesary, because the x-rays they show me are blurry, and they never point out, "see look right here. there are you 'large' cavaties." - then maybe i'd trust them... i'm still hunting down a second opinion.

i wish i could have been there with the fam, especially in the van. that is totally hansen style, all piled into a small small space, chatting away. fun times. miss you guys. lets put a disneyland trip on the books, ay?

I'm so sorry about the teeth situation! My Rob has HORRIBLE teeth and besides all the pain he is in, it's a lot of money to fix them. I can't tell you how many root canals he's had! Good luck with that part and hopefully you feel better and can eat again soon.

Any chance you're coming to Arizona and want to go shopping with me?! I can't believe you got all of those clothes for 50 cents!! I'm super jealous. I can't even start shopping for another 3 weeks until I know what we're having either...

oh gosh! I'm sorry about your dentist visit. i hate the dentist too. And do you really have gestational diabetes? DId you find out? I hope not. Good luck with everything. Did I read you are naming your baby Jane?!?!? We - well i should say I am also naming our baby Jane. I love it. However, andy isn't a huge fan. I keep telling him to "submit" other names but so far he has come up with nothing. I guess we have similar taste when it comes to names. We have an Ethan and I also really wanted a grace but I don't think I'll try for another girl just so i can use the name!! ha! good luck with everything.

Cute pics! I'm so sorry about the dentist! I haven't been in 8 years because I had the same ache for a month after my last visit. It's gonna be really fun when I go again!!

Please teach me how to shop like that! 50 cents? That must be some kind of record!

50 cents??! Way to go! How fun to spend your gymbucks on girl clothes! I went in there the other day and was so jealous of the cute girlie stuff. Boy stuff is cute too, but when you know you can't buy girls stuff it's a little different.

Anyway, sorry about the dentist. I hate not being able to swallow too and they always initiate my sensitive gag reflex. I hope the pain gets better.

Adam has taken to coloring with our printer paper too if he's awake when I'm on the computer during quiet time. Sophie's "spot" is so great. :)

What a pretty little girl Sophie is- I can't believe how grown up!

oh and I love the name Jane- "baby Jane" especially sounds so cute- you'll have to keep calling her that as she grows up-- it makes me want to have another baby - just to pick the name...that is the one thing I like about having babies- possibly the only thing (just kidding of course). And also, you look great!

I have had 2 root canals done and the pain of the dying nerve is the worst. The actual root canal isn't that bad-just annoying. I feel your pain and hope it ends soon.

just went to a new dentist this morning for a second opinion, and glad i did. i feel much better now!

I am so sorry about your teeth! The last time I went to the dentist, he offered me the gas, it was the first time I'd ever had the option and let me tell you- it made a world of difference! I don't know if that is an option, being pregnant, but I would ask!

Love your gymoree haul! Little girl clothes are just so fun!

so sorry to hear about the nightmare at the dentist; there are few things worse than tooth pain, in my estimation. i am sorry to admit i laughed outloud about your locked out story and the locksmith's oblivious comment. and i can't believe how big sophie is! and finally, that 50 cent haul is amazing! i am super impressed!

How about Jane Elise? Ummm......what about Jane Hansen? What about just plain Jane???? Personally, I like Jane Elise.

Good luck with it! I can totally understand what you mean about it flowing. I think Jane Elise is pretty! Did I mention Jane Elise?
