First things first. I know I'm a little late for listing New Year's Resolutions, but here are a few nonetheless.
1. Like 95% of American women, I want to lose weight. Specifically, I want to reach my ultimate goal weight so that I can become a "Lifetime Member" of Weight Watchers. Can I just say that I love this program? Since I've joined in September, I've lost almost 15 pounds and more importantly I feel much healthier and that this is an actual lifestyle change and not just a "diet." I highly recommend Weight Watchers to anyone! To help me with my goal, I decided I finally needed to enter reality and get a new scale that has an accurate number on it. Since my old one was always about 3-4 pounds kinder to me than any other scale, when I saw this one at Costco, I knew I had to get it.
2. Tied in with the above goal, I want to run a 10 K this year. Now, please understand that I am NOT a "runner." To be honest I don't like to run. But I do like the sense of accomplishment that comes with doing something hard and obtaining a goal. To prep myself for this goal, I'm going to do the Rex Lee Run 5 K in March. Scott even found me a "training program" online entitled "From Couch Potato to Running a 5K." Its fabulous.
3. With this being an election year, I will finally become a grown-up and vote. Please don't send me lots of hate mail for neglecting my basic rights as an American citizen -- I'm sorry, but I'm kind of apolitical. I don't really watch the news. And my basic source of whats going on in the world comes from my Yahoo! home page. Oh and Scott tries to keep me semi-informed. HOWEVER, I am making it my goal this year not only to vote, but to actually do some research on "issues" and the candidates' "platforms" and other stuff like that to try and make a fairly educated decision here.
Alright, now that THAT'S out of the way, on to the rest of the miscellany. Here is what we've been up to:
Over the Christmas break we went on a bowling trip to Fat Cats with some friends of ours from the MBA program. The kids had a blast and the only downfall was that we actually had to PAY to go bowling since Muffy was at home for Christmas and therefore not working that night.
We also decided to let Ethan's boots from last year finally Rest in Peace. We ended up finding an exact replica at Target in the next size up, so needless to say Ethan was ecstatic.
Also at Target, I attempted to stock up on hair grooming implements in an effort to tame Grace's crazy hair. I'll keep you posted on how well THAT is working.
Next up are a couple examples of Ethan's newfound writing capabilities. After hanging up my new calendar that Emily sent me for Christmas, Ethan was studying it one day and pulled up a chair to get a closer look. Then he asked me how to spell "date." I spelled it for him, but wasn't really paying attention. Then he announced that on "1-6" we were going on a date. Apparently Ethan feels like he's really missing out on something when Scott and I go out, so he took matters into his own hands and scheduled something in for himself. He decided he wanted to go to Applebee's on his date with mom, dad, Grace, and Sophie. Let's just say that we will not ALL be going out on a date again any time soon.
This next sample is a "menu" he made one day while I was busy making up mine for the month. It was actually really funny because he drew all these boxes and numbered them and then started filling them out with what he wanted to eat all while asking how to spell everything. Notice how he's still in the write-the-letters-wherever-you-can-fit-them-in-the-space phase.
Ta da! And here's Grace! Our new little Sunbeam on her first day of primary. She was VERY excited to be able to go with the big kids and Ethan. Of course, it doesn't hurt that her Sunbeam teachers bring bags of snacks and treats for the class each week.
One of Grace's Christmas presents was the cheerleader version of "Bella Dancerella." And yes it is as ridiculous as it sounds. Here are the kids getting into it. Notice how Ethan is just as into it, if not more so than Grace. And also notice that although it is regularly in the 20's (or lower) here this winter, my children insist on wearing summer fare, regardless of how many times I tell them its freezing outside. As a side-note, Sophie is actually HILARIOUS when they watch this video and gets so excited when the "Bella squad" starts cheering.
Here's a shot of the supermuppet with her winter hat and sweater. And in exciting developmental milestone news, she said her first word(s) this week! She can now inconsistently say "mama," and slightly more consistently say "hi." Although the "hi" is mostly inflection and not completely pronounced. She's getting the hang of things, though! And although she is nowhere near walking, she IS showing interest in trying to pull up on things, and she has got the fastest bear-crawl-while-keeping-her-head-on-the-ground moves you will ever see. I really should get some video footage of THAT before she outgrows it.
And for the real excitement of our week, I took the kids to the dentist on Thursday because I was a little afraid that Grace had some major cavities that needed taking care of. To my total shock and disbelief, neither one of them did! What I did learn is that Ethan is a teeth grinder and has worn down a good 3/4 of his top teeth according to the dentist. Oh, and based on the x-Rays it looks as though he will have a case of "shark teeth" before too long -- which basically means that his permanent teeth will start growing in behind the baby teeth before those ever fall out.
And Grace, while not having any cavities this go round, DEFINITELY needs to stop sucking her thumb as it is causing a major cross-bite problem with her jaw. Oh well, at least the kids LOVED going to this dentist and thought it was so much fun. I can't say that I've ever felt that way about a dental excursion...
And finally...
Well, that's about all folks. To make up for the lameness of the last past month of my life, story-wise, I'm creating a contest here. I'm in a reading rut. It seems like all the books I've been reading lately are non-fiction ones for various book clubs, and I've already read and re-read everything in my library and I need some new suggestions! So, please -- recommend your favorites. Whoever recommends the book that I decide to read first, gets a prize! Sounds fun, right?? Please humor me, people.
Alright, I'm out. I've got some American Idol auditions to re-watch on the TiVo...

YAY! the long awaited blog post. so many fun things to comment on. looks like someone exed out mister martin luther on the calendar?? and i'm glad ethan wants "cookies" for dinner one night. sophalicious is so dang cute, i just want to pick her up and squeeze her. i like totally miss your kids!! i like totally called you house yesterday and asked to speak to grace, b/c i miss her cute little voice so much. i'm so happy that y'all get to go to europe. what a once in a lifetime opp! I so wish that i can go to europe one day. i would love to go to austria, france and switzerland. ... one day....
do disneyland next year is on the calendar? don't 'tease' me bro.
Yea, that's just what me and Amy said about MLK day. Well, this post determined that we will DEFINITELY drive out for Easter week. We'll just have one of those "to heck with it" trips and hope the car doesn't leave us stranded. Like you, I was stunned how those kids sat in the dentist chair like it was a treat. WHOA! Amy's book suggestion is Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez. Hugs and kisses to those precious children.
I LOVE watching the american idol auditions. I get a stomach work out from laughing so hard. I am totally amazed that your kids liked going to the dentist. For Liam and Makenzie it is pure torture. Chris and I can't wait to travel to England (he served his mission in London). What an exciting trip to look forward to. My Mom just gave me the book "Spy" By Ted Bell, because I was in the same rut. I am enjoying it.
Wow, overseas with all the kids. That should be an adventure! They'll have a stamp in their passport before I do... We'll all be up there that weekend before you leave for Kenny's wedding. Susi and crew too - we should all hang out. That's awesome about weight watchers - keep it up! And books - did you read A Thousand Splendid Suns yet? Same author as the Kite Runner and I liked it better. Also for some fun girly fiction - try Emily Giffin's "Something Borrowed" and then read "Something Blue". They are a hoot and will make you happy.
Sometimes when you post I'm so overwhelmed with all I want to comment on that I inevitably leave something out. Well, here I go...
Passports!! Yea! I'm so excited for you guys. That is totally neat and even though you'll have the rugrats with you, I'm sure it'll be amazing.
I can't believe Grace is in Sunbeams already. What a doll!
Nice job on the weight loss. 15 pounds! That's a lot. Congrats and keep it up. You are my role model.
As for books, I'm in the middle of Ella Minnow Pea, but so far it's cute. I also liked The Wednesday Letters. Paula's reading Atonement right now (like the book the new movie is based on). Maybe she'd recommend that one? By the way, I finished The Goose Girl. Very good!! I really enjoyed it.
And Emily, nice taser reference, if I'm reading that line correctly!
I think you should read "Escape" by Carolyn Jessop. She escaped from the FLDS culture and tells her story. It is crazy. I read it in one day--into the night--I was very intrigued.
love the new post. i like all the pictures and stories. so fun about your big trip- that will be great. good luck with the resolutions. and i probably don't have too many book suggestions that you haven't read already. recently i've read "these is my words" by nancy turner and "book of a thousand days" by shannon hale and really liked both. besides that, i've got nothing. there's always twilight again, right?:) and mya would want to wear summer clothes also, just like she wanted to wear a skirt today even though it was pretty cold.
That sounds like a lot of the things that I want to accomplish...although I think I would be content with the 5K. I have that scale, too. Gotta love Costco! Let me know what you find out about the issues and candidates. I'd like to be more informed, but unfortunately that is not the top of my list this year. I am so jealous about your England trip...can I come? We're going to Disneyland instead. Tata!
I always enjoy your updates long or short form.
We are HUGE WW fans in our house. Doug lost about 25lbs in three months on it (I swear men always loose faster!!)
Good luck with your running goals. I think it's great to take baby steps. When I first started running 2 years ago I couldn't even do an entire mile.
The calendar is cracking me up and yay for no cavities!!
p.s. I think I am a bit apolitical myself. I am so out of the loop on things--it's pathetic.
Wow. I agree with Natalie. I have some much I want to comment on. First,I am so jealous about your exciting trip. It sounds like it is going to be a great experience. Second, way to go on losing 15 pounds. Keep it up! Third, I too am going to run a 5k this year. I am so not a runner either that I looked up "Couch potato to 5k" (even though I am kinda of in shape still from pre-baby and during my pregnancy I worked out, I still need to train) and I really liked the program. Fourth, I recommend a couple of books-I am currently reading (and liking) Atonement. I read The Kite Runner recently and liked it. Also, An Assembly Such As This: A Novel by Fitzwilliam Darcy is pretty good. Fifth, I too have made a goal to make a concerted effort to be an educated voter this election and it is going pretty well for me (it helps that Logan is very into politics and helps me stay informed but now I can actually hold my own in a conversation). Whew-what a comment.
I appreciate your new hair styling supplies...we have some serious hair issues at our house too. If you haven't read The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver I highly reccomend it. Also, Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner (I think) is great!
So many funny things going on at your house! I really love Ethan copying your calendar. Do you really plan a whole meal plan for the whole month? I can only get myself to do one week at a time!
That will be so much fun to go to the British Isles! Especially since you have family out there to visit at the same time. I am definitely jealous of that.
And great job on the weight loss. I've always heard the best things about Weight Watchers. I'm just trying to get myself back exercising regularly again. I did that similar running program by the same guy who designed the 'couch to 5k' only I did the train for a half-marathon in 8 weeks. It's great to have a goal like that! I need to come up with something like that to motivate myself!
These Is My words - was my favorite read of last year. But I'm in a rut with new books too. I'm half way through the Stephanie Plum series but those books are merely fast reads to waste time!
Jess! Great goals! One of mine is to recycle, so do me a favor and email me your mailing address and in honor of your contest I will send you the last couple of nonfiction books I read, deal?
The Europe trip sounds like a great idea! You can't miss a chance like that!
Wow! No cavities, a child in sunbeams, Ethan writing and A TRIP TO THE BRITISH ISLES! What an exciting life you lead Jessica!:) I wish I could suggest some books, but unless it is a suggestion on which "Complete Austen PBS movie" I like most, then I am no help. Good luck with everything.
I am reading The Book Theif and enjoying it. A young adult book set in WW2 Germany.
Your trip sounds very exciting!
You have to to read Sanditon. It's Jane Austen's last work she started before she died. She only made it about 11 1/2 chapters into it and "another lady" finished it. Alicia and I both just read it and it tops right up there with Pride and Prejudice. A definite must read, especially since you're going to England!
I am so excited for you. You have to go to Wales and see all the old castles. The kiddos would love it! Congrats on the weight loss. That's A-W-E-S-O-M-E! Now wejust need pictures!
jessica- i loved catching up on all of your pictures. as you know, i always love your stories. Good luck with the 10K! You'll love it. I'm really excited about your trip. You guys are going to have so much fun!!
Hey Jessica. I just tagged you. Check out my blog to see the questions to answer or completely ignore this. Either way is fine with me!!
Jessica:
I always LOVE your updates, and was so glad to see a new one.
I'm totally impressed with your 15 lb weight loss, you go girl!
The pictures of the kids are so cute, I love how Ethan and Grace are loving each other in the bowling picture.
Your photo of 5 passports made me a little sick to my stomach however, because we just had to get 4 of them and the cost was staggering. I laid awake thinking about all the things I'd rather buy with that money, for an entire night! I feel like after paying for the passports that I can't really afford the trip! Have fun in Europe though. :)
Good for you on the running goal, I'm planning on running the Tufts 10K this fall. It's no Boston Marathon, but I don't really have any interest in running 26.2 miles...ever. It just feels good to set a goal and accomplish it!
